BengalsBengalsThe students and staff at the Bonar Law Memorial School are proud to announce that three students were chosen as official torchbearers for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics. Peter Hachey, Justin Lawson and Carolyn Simon will be carrying the Olympic Torch in different parts of Canada later in the fall. These students live active and were chosen through Sogo Active, a fitness program, which was sponsored by Coca-Cola.

This position is a big honour and the three students from BLMS that were chosen were nominated by a program called Sogo Active. Sogo Active is a program sponsored by Coca-Cola. This program promotes healthy and active living. Potential torchbearers that registered with Sogo Active are to record the minutes they are active per day and to reach their goal that they had set for the week. Each time a person meets their goal for the week their name gets entered for a chance to become an Official Torchbearer for the 2010 Winter Olympic Torch Relay.

Parents of these torchbearers are very proud of their kids and are more than excited to see their kids carry the Olympic Flame, as this is an experience both of them will never forget. Parent Phyllis Simon says “Honestly, I really didn’t think that anyone that I knew would be a Torchbearer, especially my own daughter. I’m so happy that she got picked. I can proudly say that I'm a mother of a Torchbearer!” All parents will be cheering their children on as they carry the Flame, whether the distance of their segment is 3km or 300m.

The Winter Olympic Torch Relay for 2010 is a torch relay across Canada, making it the longest Torch Relay in Olympic history. Millions of people filled surveys, entered ballots and lived healthy and active for a chance to go down in history. After careful consideration, 12,000 lucky Canadian citizens were chosen to take part in this special occasion, including BLMS’ own Justin Lawson, Peter Hachey and Carolyn Simon. This position as torch bearer is an honour that any person would like to have but only selected people can partake in this experience. About 12,000 people across Canada have the opportunity to be an Official Torchbearer for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. A Salt Lake City Torchbearer in 2002 once said "No matter how powerful the Olympic Flame is and what it represents, the flame inside each of us is greater than that flame. But what the Olympic Flame does is reflect off of each of us and inspire us to live up to the ideals of the Olympic Movement." Congratulations to the torchbearers from BLMS!
