This boardwalk was built to allow visitors to the sand dunes to walk along them without damaging the fragile ecosystem. Sand dunes are often covered in marram grass whose roots stabalize the sand. When people walk directly on the dunes the grass can be damaged, the sand of the dunes can then be eroded by wind and water. Sand dunes are important for providing and protecting habitat which helps maintain bio-diversity.
